In the last few weeks another one of our Constitutionally protected rights was attacked and wounded. President Obama forced a government mandate on religious institutions and you didn’t even raise eyebrow … a lot of you didn’t even notice. Those of us that did notice were shocked and amazed; not at the actions of the President that’s nothing new … but at the lack of a reaction from the press and the public and that so many Americans seemed to be completely indifferent to it.
When President Obama mandated that Catholic institutions must provide birth control to women, even though the faith prohibits it, he attacked not only the church, he attacked the second amendment. He also attack capitalism, free enterprise, private practice, and freedom of choice, as well.
How did he attack freedom of choice? Simple, when anyone is forced to provide a product or benefit even though it goes against their morals, religious beliefs, or their financial best interest, etc., then their freedom of choice has been attacked.
How did he attack private practice? Businesses provide benefits to employees not out of obligation, but as an incentive. They offer these incentives as a reward to retain good employees and as inducement to attract and recruit new employees. If a private enterprise is forced by government to provide employer benefits under penalty of law, then private practice has been attacked.
How did he attack free enterprise? Our free enterprise system allows businesses and workers to negotiate for themselves in the market, in order for them to have freedom to pursue their interest in the best way possible for themselves, and their business. Free enterprise allows people to go into business for themselves or to work for someone voluntarily. Since there isn’t anything voluntary about Obama’s latest mandate, then free enterprise has been attacked.
How did he attack capitalism? Our capitalist economy is based on private ownership of production and business. It is also dependent on a free market. Our free market determines what our wants and needs are … not government. In capitalism, businesses are driven to earn profits based off of free markets. When government intervenes to create a false market (mandates) then capitalism and the free market has been attacked.
How is it an attack on the first amendment? The first amendment states that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,;”. President Obama has clearly ignored the clause that forbids prohibiting “the free exercise thereof” … when government does that, then the first amendment has been attacked. Attacked by the very government that the first amendment was written to protect us from.
If you are a Catholic you should be outraged, even if you disagree with the church’s stance on birth control. That is a debate meant for the church and it’s followers … it is not a debate to be held between the Catholic Church and the US Government. If you are a Christians you should be concerned. If you belong to any religious faith you should be equally as concerned too. When government attacks one faith, it attacks them all.
But it doesn’t stop there. If you are a business owner you should be angry that government, through your elected officials, has decided that you don’t have a voice or a choice in selecting what your healthcare policies will or will not cover. As an employee you should be angry that the government has just jeopardized your healthcare coverage, as more and more employers may eliminate coverage altogether … just as Catholic organizations are now considering. After all, the healthcare law requires you to obtain health insurance whether or not your employer provides it to you or not.
The healthcare law is one founded in tyranny and despotism. I have always said that I thought Barrack and Michelle Obama spoke and behaved like would-be dictators. Attacking the Catholic Church in this cruel and confrontational way illustrates that better than anything I could ever hope to do.
There you have it.
Pass it along if you like or let me know if I don’t have a clue.
