Progressive Past

Progressive Past

I have a quote for you: “The world is going to change radically, and I am satisfied that governments will have to do many things which are now left to individuals and corporations. I am satisfied, for instance, that the government will have to take over all the great natural resources - all the water power, all the coal mines, all the oil fields, etc. They will have to be government-owned.”

Who said that?
A) Hillary Clinton
B) Barack Obama
C) Bill Clinton
D) None of the above.

If you answered none of the above you’re correct because Woodrow Wilson said it. He also believed that a President must be a philosophical man, capable of thinking in world terms … sound familiar? The current President (and other like-minded politicians) are saying similar things today. I bring this up because President Wilson was a progressive … so was Teddy Roosevelt. The progressive movement of today is not fielding new ideas, they are carrying on the tradition of liberal/progressive elites in power who wish to radically change not only government and business, but our way of life … not just here in the United States, but globally as well.

Their ideas are not new - they are the same old tries at growing government by promising help when the real intent is to control. They believe only a certain like-minded governing class should have controlling power and that the masses really cannot govern themselves. Their power is taken away from them periodically through elections, but they never give up on their (poor) ideology.

Here’s a quote from President Obama’s White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel: “Never let a serious crisis go to waste. What I mean by that is it's an opportunity to do things you couldn't do before." Now we have a mortgage crisis, health care crisis, Wall Street crisis, economic crisis, employment crisis, and automobile crisis. Which one can we waste? Greed rules here because the White House and Congress are not willing to let any crisis go to waste … it’s an opportunity to do things you couldn’t do before. But what they could not calculate or foresee was that Americans love this country and are not willing to let the “smart ones” fundamentally change it.

Madison wrote in the Federalist Papers, “In framing a government which is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: you must first enable the government to control the governed: and in the next place oblige it to control itself.”
Oblige it to control itself, imagine that.

Today we have a government that is out of control and has lost its way. We must take it back by adhering to the incredible plan laid forth by Washington, Franklin, Jefferson, Madison, and the rest. A plan that set us on the path to becoming a great nation and people. We must turn away from the liberal/progressive notion that says we are no longer that great nation of people, but just another member of a global community. The world depends on the United States of America being a country that is strong (economically and militarily) and never changing in our core beliefs or in our founding documents. Ultimately, a strong independent United States is good and necessary for the rest of the world.

Texans for Hurd

Have you heard of Texans for Hurd

Yesterday afternoon I met a man who seeks to run for U.S. Congress his name is --- Will B. Hurd (that is his real name - not a stage name). He has an impressive resume (go to his website to learn more at www.texansforhurd.com), he’s tall, nice looking, and accomplished. He is easy to approach and has an authentic smile. He worked for the CIA and may know things that, if he told us, he would have to kill us. Kidding. He’s a local kid that has done good. He’s from San Antonio, TX and currently lives in our suburb community of Helotes, which is one of the fastest growing communities in the country. I like him. I liked that when he spoke to us collectively, he did not use prepared text - that tells me he believes in what he is saying and is genuine.

Mr. Hurd is coming into politics at perhaps the best time for a new face. Many of us are paying closer attention to politics than ever before (especially national politics). I told him that people like me are looking for boldness from our politicians. We want them to mean what they say and say what they mean. Just as Ronald Regan said in 1975, “Our people look for a cause to believe in. Is it a third party we need, or is it a new and revitalized second party, raising a banner of no pale pastels, but bold colors which make it unmistakably clear where we stand on all of the issues troubling the people?”

What we don’t want is a new face without ideas. I often tell folks that the problem with Democrats and Republicans is there is not a great deal of difference between them. Most of them have gone to the same schools, they live in the same neighborhoods, and belong to the same organizations. We are not looking for a kinder, gentler Republican or a compassionate conservative. Using those types of words implies that conservative Republicans are not and never have been either gentle or compassionate, when the reverse is true.

Mr. Hurd seems to have what it takes to get started in politics. He is a patriot and he already has a loyal following that know and believe in him. If he can get every Aggie under 40 to vote for him - he’s in. I don’t know him well enough yet, though. I plan to attend a few more events and hopefully get to know him and learn more about him and I encourage others to do the same. So check out his website and page on Facebook (or ask some Aggies about him)!

Racism

Racism

Racism is not a word we should throw around loosely, like jackass, or loser. By throwing it around, we not only diminish the word, but (more importantly) the action … not just when we are debating politics, but in the rest of life. Racism cannot be used as an accusation simply because of disagreements. Racism is defined by history not just the dictionary. Racism brought on U.S slavery, German death camps, and South African apartheid. Racism, to my mind, is a hatred of other races and believing that your race is superior to all others.

Racism fuels the Neo-Nazi and The New Black Panther movements. Remember that the German Nazi Fascism of WWII was a socialist populist progressive movement and the New Black Panther movement supports the Democrat liberal progressive movement of today. Danger lurks with them, not with Americans that don’t agree with the ever expanding growth of our government that this Progressive/Liberal President and Congress are undertaking.

Anyone that believes racism is fueling the protest happening in our country is irresponsible and has chosen to ignore the progress our country has made relating to race. The opposition and protest are not simply about health care, but an ever increasing expansion of government control and power over our population (not to mention a crippling national debt).

My family and much of my extended family and relatives are living proof of the progress we’ve made in the U.S. My wife and I are not of the same race, our children are considered mixed race, and we are the new face of America. I have many cousins whose families would be considered of mixed race and their kids have had kids of mixed race. In our home we do our best to be race neutral - we explain that God makes us all different on the outside but we are all His and we are all the same on the inside … that is how I believe we should look upon each other.

I’ve had to pay more attention at home because my daughter is very perceptive. I used to like to tell racial jokes and poke fun of the different races, but now I’m careful. I don’t want them learning or picking up bad habits from me just as I picked up bad habits from grown ups when I was a kid. I can’t blame my parents because my Mother was a saint and I don’t remember my Dad using a lot of racial jokes. Most of the jokes I picked up are the result of listening to Richard Pryor or on construction sites … but jokes aren’t the problem - actions are.

Discrimination is the issue. We haven’t really addressed that, but I would not limit it to racial discrimination. People are discriminated in a variety of ways - there’s ethnic, religious, and gender discrimination as well as educational, occupational, and class discrimination. People are discriminated against for how they look, smell, and behave or if they are fat, skinny, or ugly. People are discriminated for anything, from the home they live in to the neighbor hood they come from and even for what they drive.

Acceptance is tough - it is what we have to work on. However, not on politics and social issues - we have a right and a duty to stand on principles that matter to us even if they vary strongly from someone else - even if that means we are at odds with the first non-white President of the United States. That doesn’t make you a racist, it shows we have the freedom and liberty guaranteed by the Constitution of these United States to protest our government and them in elected office.

Football Analogy

A Football Analogy

I’ve been a Dallas Cowboys fan all of my life. Most of my memories of the team begin during their hey-day of the 1970’s when the team became “America’s Team”. In a way, the Dallas Cowboys symbolize what is right and wrong with United States of America.

The Cowboys have a tradition of winning. During the ’70’s they won with style and class that made other teams (dare I say, even entire cities) green with envy. Their success earned them respect on the field of play and in business boardrooms. Those teams were great.

In the early ’90’s, things changed with Jerry Jones. The team became a winner again, but with an entirely different ethic. The team took an Al Davis (owner of the Oakland Raiders) ethic of “Just win baby” nothing else matters. In a way it works. The team makes lots of money, more than it ever has … but are they “America’s Team” anymore? Not really. They are not respected and looked at with admiration as they used to be. Respect is earned. What you do matters, how you do it matters, and who you do it with matters. Maybe things will change in the coming decade - we’ll see.

Our country was built upon a foundation of strength, fairness, self determination, freedom, and liberty. That foundation was reinforced with individual accountability. Americans were considered good. We went to church, were fair, brave, honest, hard working, generous, it is this list of superlatives that made us great. Without these attributes, we never could have achieved so much in the short time that we have been a nation. Yes, there is hypocrisy - no people or nation has ever been exempt from it. Yes, we have faults and wrongs have been committed - let those with out sin please step forward.

We are a nation that has become dependant rather than independent. We’ve let our long held beliefs, morals, ethics, honors, and traditions erode. We’ve allowed the privileged class, in combination with the under-privileged class and political liberalism, to ridicule, mock, disregard, and cast away much of what was good in the United States. We live a more leisurely lifestyle then at any other time in history - yet if you were to listen to some, you would never know it. Personal wealth has replaced personal responsibility. Expecting a hand-out has replaced lending a hand in business and at home. “Yes we can” has replaced “yes I can” - the implication being that the Untied States is no longer the land of opportunity and we have to depend on collectiveness to achieve our hopes and dreams. I don’t buy into that thinking and I don’t think most Americans do either.

I look at the Cowboys and hope that some day a new ethic will emerge that more closely resembles the team that I grew up with. I look to our country with the same hope that we will renew our commitment to become “a more perfect union” never satisfied with what is wrong and correcting our shortcomings as a nation and a people and to refocus on those virtues that build great things.

Remember September 11

Another 9/11 is here. Eight years have passed and we are still at war against a movement that is set on killing Americans, for no other reason than because we are Americans. It’s that simple. That is why were attacked. No one country attacked us. We were attacked for social and religious reasons. I think we forget that. We also were attacked because we are a friend and ally to the people and country of Israel. Most of us forget what a prince of our supposed ally, Saudi Arabia, said after delivering a financial aid check to then Mayor Rudy Giuliani; he implied that we had it coming due to our stance in the Middle East. After he found that out, Mr. Giuliani gave the check back.

We are at war primarily with Arab Muslims in Afghanistan where many Arabs have gone to be trained under Osama bin Laden and in Iraq (Al-Qaeda had training camps in Iraq long before the war). We took the war to them there, so that we would not have to fight them here. If you read the 911 Report, you will learn that Al-Queda (and Muslims generally) places a high emphasis on keeping infidels out of Arabian soil. It drives them on to drive us out. However, even if we pulled out of Iraq right now, they would still strive to kill us.

We were not engaged with Al-Queda before 9-11 yet they struck. We are not at war with a nation or group of nations. We are threatened by a global Islamic movement that is intent to subdue or kill non-Muslins (and even Muslins that are not Muslin enough). Prior to 9-11, I hadn’t heard of Al-Qaeda. I’d heard of the PLO, Hamas and Hezbala and I knew that they were dangerous. These Islamic terror networks are set on a global mission. Even if they could remove the U.S. and Israel from the picture, their mission would not be complete. Their intent is to restore an Islamic empire. I keep that thought in mind.

I have watched a beheading and torture video captured in Iraq on the internet. I think all of us should so that we are aware of the nature of the Islamic threat we face. The news media will not describe what Muslin terrorist have done and will do to captured prisoners. The media reports that our protectors are criminals. Torture and kill is their preferred treatment of infidels, and they would do that to you if given a chance. They flew planes into the buildings hoping to kill thousands more than they did. The intent was to have people die the most horrible deaths imaginable, by burning to death or being crushed under the building rubble. Had the planes been flown into the buildings just a little later that morning, there could have been fifty thousand dead at The World Trade Center alone.

So complain about where we have chosen to fight, or how long it has taken, and the military lives we have lost if you wish - I will not. I am grateful to the military personnel and their families for the sacrifices they have made to keep everyday Americans from being killed here at home. I’m flying Old Glory to remember that day. Texans learned that after the fall of the Alamo the battle cry was “Remember the Alamo”. Perhaps our citizen cry should be “Remember September 11”. We have been safe here at home, but for how much longer?

About judges

Regarding Judges

I have a problem with judges. I think we place them in too high of a regard. (I think that way about a lot of professions … but judges hold a special place with me.)

Our country’s founders were honorable and courageous. They pledged their treasure, their reputations, and their lives to found this new nation, but there are some things that they did not get right - and one of those things is lifetime appointments to the bench. I don’t think anyone should be given a life time appointment to govern (and govern is what they do). They govern without accountability, without fear of repercussions, or punishment for wrong actions and mistakes - none of us have a deal like that. I have thought for a long time now that federally appointed judges should have to face re-appointment on a regular basis. They have to earn a vote of confidence before they are put on the bench and they should have to keep that confidence in order to stay.

Last week a State Judge in New Hampshire ruled that a home schooled child had to be enrolled into a public school - not because she wasn’t being well educated, but because she was not receiving group learning and social interaction. Where does the Judge think this kid is - ON MARS? Most parents of home schooled kids are members of church and civic groups. They enroll there children in activates outside the home - little leagues, swimming classes, the arts, and play dates so that the kids get interaction. How many times have we seen home schooled kids win the national spelling bee? They’ve seemed normal enough to me and well-rounded. I have family members that have home schooled their kids. Those kids have grown up, gotten married, have kids of their own and are doing well. Some how they picked up interpersonal learning and social skills (lucky for them a “brainiac” judge never got hold of ‘em).

How many times do we hear of some “honorable judge” letting dangerous felons back onto the streets to rob, hurt, sell drugs, or kill again? How many times have they let a child molester, a child rapist, or a child abductor back into society just to have them finally kill an innocent child? One time would be too many, but we hear of it over and over again.

What do some judges fear? … losing re-election! Cry me a river. Judges make these kinds of decisions because they know they can. It doesn’t cost them anything. They become foolishly arrogant. Now, I know I’m painting with a broad brush here but because of the few, many must pay.

Obama speaks to school kids

Maybe you have heard that the President is going to broadcast a speech to or school kids next week. A lot of people are up in arms about it. Some are saying that he’s trying to indoctrinate our kids. I say they should have been worried about that a long time ago … the schools have been indoctrinating them for years. Others say that the president should be reaching out to kids and that he has right to do so. I believe that elections have consequences. The Democrats have taken control of Washington and think that they have been given a mandate to fundamentally change the country. I know this because that is what President Obama himself said about the last election.

Now many Americans are learning that Obama and the Democrats meant what they said and they don’t like it. Where is the best place to fundamentally change the country? With our children. Where do most of them spend their day? At school, where Mom and Dad trust them to be taken care of, educated, and nurtured. I don’t think it is outrageous for the President to speak to school kids - it may even be commendable - that is if it were just to encourage kids to study and grow (not to ask kids to ask themselves how they can help the President and pledge him their support). It sounds like what has happened in recent history when radicals take control of government - they groom the children in their image and over time turn them against the hand that has fed them. In America we only have to look back to the 1960’s to understand the change that is taking place.

As I said, elections have consequences and we are paying them. Today there are 40% of us that will follow this new government to a cliff and jump off, another 40% that will never accept the changes that are coming, 10% are wondering what they have done, and the rest just don’t care.
